Amid the AI-driven market boom, stock markets have been performing strongly, prompting many individuals to invest aggressively in hopes of securing enough funds for early retirement. But just how much money is truly needed to retire comfortably?
The international data website 'Visual Capitalist' has released its 2026 ranking of 'Cost of a Comfortable Retirement by Country.' Taiwan ranks 50th, with an estimated requirement of approximately 354,000 USD (around 11.2 million TWD). In contrast, Singapore tops the global list as the most expensive country for retirement, requiring an estimated 1.146 million USD (over 36 million TWD).
Visual Capitalist, using data from lending service NetCredit and global database Numbeo, calculated the cost for an American to live a 'dignified retirement' in various countries worldwide. The estimate is based on local average living expenses, with an additional 20% added to account for a more comfortable lifestyle. This ranking covers 95 countries, listing the total amount needed for a 'comfortable retirement' in each.
The results show that the title of 'most expensive retirement country' does not go to a major Western nation, but to Singapore in Asia, with a retirement threshold of up to 1.1 million USD (about 35 million TWD), far surpassing other countries. Iceland ranks second at 893,000 USD (about 28.25 million TWD), followed by Switzerland at 859,000 USD (about 27.18 million TWD), Luxembourg at 794,000 USD (about 25.12 million TWD), and the United States at 738,000 USD (about 23.35 million TWD).
