Amid the explosive global growth of the semiconductor and artificial intelligence (AI) industries, demand for tech talent has surged, creating a pivotal career transition opportunity for professionals facing job stagnation or those from non-STEM backgrounds. Huang Yun-ting, a 28-year-old humanities graduate from National Chengchi University and former real estate manager, reevaluated her career path after an involuntary job loss. Through a talent development program jointly operated by the Ministry of Labor’s Taoyuan-Miaoli Branch and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, she successfully secured a position as a project engineer at Tung Hsin Electronics before completing the training—marking a real-life success story of transitioning from a humanities and real estate background into the tech sector.

Huang, a graduate of the Department of Ethnology at National Chengchi University, spent five years building her career in the real estate industry, where her strong performance led to a headhunting offer from a construction company to serve as a manager. However, after experiencing the setback of involuntary termination, she reflected on her past interactions with semiconductor clients in the real estate sector and became inspired by the industry’s future prospects. Despite her non-STEM academic background and repeated rejections during job applications, she made the determined decision to enroll in the 'Semiconductor and AI Application Professional Talent Development Program.'

During the training, Huang systematically studied core topics such as semiconductor fundamentals, manufacturing processes, and cleanroom operations under the guidance of professors from National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University and industry experts. Thanks to her proactive learning attitude and job-seeking efforts, she received a job offer from Tung Hsin Electronics Industrial Co., Ltd. as a project engineer before completing the program. Now two months into her new role, Huang shared that while the new environment is challenging, the knowledge gained during training has given her confidence. She continues to review course materials during her free time to deepen her technical expertise.

The semiconductor industry is currently facing a critical talent shortage. Since 2022, the Labor Force Development Agency’s Taoyuan-Miaoli Branch has partnered with National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University to establish the 'Semiconductor and Key Technology Industry Talent Development Base.' To date, the base has trained nearly 1,000 participants, with about half successfully entering the semiconductor and related tech industries. Notably, approximately one-third of these trainees come from non-technical backgrounds, demonstrating strong cross-sector career mobility.

Lai Chia-jen, Director of the Taoyuan-Miaoli Branch, stated, 'Semiconductors are Taiwan’s strategic pillar industry. We will continue to cultivate practical talent through this development base and facilitate industry placements to address the talent gap.' Chen Yung-fu, Vice President of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, emphasized that the program’s curriculum starts from foundational theory and places special emphasis on interdisciplinary knowledge integration, enabling non-STEM participants to merge their existing expertise with semiconductor knowledge and leverage cross-domain advantages.

The Talent Development Base will launch three cohorts of the 'Semiconductor and AI Application Professional Talent Development Program' in the fourth quarter of 2026, covering the latest AI application trends and practical semiconductor knowledge, aiming to train 120 individuals. Unemployed or job-seeking individuals interested in entering the tech industry can now apply online via the 'Taiwan Employment Portal' website.
