According to Forbes' Real-Time Billionaires List, Lin Tsung-Ki, founder and chairman of Chuan Hu Technology, has seen his net worth surge due to a sharp rise in the company's stock price, briefly securing the title of Taiwan's wealthiest individual. On August 10, Lin's net worth reached approximately USD 16.7 billion (about NT$538.7 billion), surpassing Jason Cheng, chairman of Yageo Corporation, to become Taiwan's richest person, ranking 173rd globally at the time.
In response, Hsieh Jin-He, chairman of Wealth Media, posted on Facebook on September 9 under the title 'City Governance Linked to Corporate Fate!' noting that Lin's ascent to the top of Taiwan's wealth ranking has drawn significant attention. Since the beginning of this year, 33 Taiwanese companies have seen their stock prices exceed NT$10,000 per share. Among them, only InnoMedia (5274) is based in Hsinchu, while the other two—Chuan Hu (2059) and Winway (6515)—are from Kaohsiung.
Who are Taiwan's wealthiest? Why did Lin Tsung-Ki become the richest?
Chuan Hu Technology (2059), founded by Lin Tsung-Ki in 1986, initially specialized in manufacturing furniture slides and hardware components. In recent years, the company has pivoted to producing AI server rails and cable management arms. With the explosive growth in demand for AI data centers, Chuan Hu's revenue and stock price have surged simultaneously.
In August, Chuan Hu's stock price broke the NT$10,000 mark, becoming the third 'NT$10,000 stock' in Taiwan's stock market history. This surge significantly increased the net worth of Lin Tsung-Ki, who holds a large stake in the company. Since Forbes' Real-Time Billionaires List updates wealth figures based on fluctuations in U.S. and Taiwan stocks and exchange rates, the latest data as of September shows Taiwan's top five wealthiest individuals as follows:
Rank | Wealthiest Individual | Primary Business | Net Worth (USD) 1 | Lin Tsung-Ki | Chuan Hu Technology | ~USD 17.9 billion 2 | Jason Cheng | Yageo Corporation | ~USD 16.6 billion 3 | Terry Gou | Foxconn | ~USD 15.5 billion 4 | Barry Lam | Quanta Computer | ~USD 15.3 billion 5 | Rick Tsai | MediaTek | ~USD 13.0 billion
Hsieh Jin-He pointed out that while business associations exist across Taiwan, Taichung's 'Pan-Shih Association'—though long-established and large in scale—mainly consists of companies deeply rooted in China. Apart from Hong Jing (7769), most of these firms have struggled in recent years. In contrast, Kaohsiung's 'Port City Association' is gradually rising, with members including Winway, one of the 'NT$10,000 stocks'; ASE (3771), which is expanding new factories and approaching a market cap of NT$3 trillion; and Wan Run (6187), which has gained prominence through CoWoS equipment, with its stock price soaring from NT$84.1 to NT$1,490 over three years.
Hsieh emphasized that the rise of these Port City Association companies is closely tied to Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-Mai's leadership in AI transformation. He further noted that TSMC (2330), the world's leading semiconductor foundry, has established a presence in Kaohsiung. Newly developed industrial parks in Luzhu, Baipu, Nanzih, and Renwu have attracted 49 materials firms, 22 equipment manufacturers, 16 packaging and testing companies, 10 IC design firms, and seven semiconductor manufacturers including TSMC. Hsieh stated that the seeds planted by Mayor Chen over the past six years will yield a bountiful harvest in the next decade.
He also contrasted this with China旺旺, whose stock price recently surpassed HK$3 (after dropping as low as HK$2.88), noting that founder Tsai Eng-Meng's earlier warnings were not unfounded: 'In recent years, companies chasing the China dream have suffered significant setbacks.'
