Interview with Shen Po-yang Sparks Backlash from Blue Camp: Wang Wei-chung Responds, 'I Just Did an Interview'

Wang Wei-chung, widely perceived as leaning toward the Blue Camp, recently conducted an exclusive interview with Shen Po-yang, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate for Taipei mayor. The program generated massive online traffic, surpassing 3.06 million views. However, it also triggered strong criticism from many Blue Camp supporters, who accused Wang of tarnishing his reputation with the phrase, 'You've ruined your lifelong reputation in one stroke.'

In response, Wang Wei-chung shared his thoughts for the first time today (24) in a column for CommonWealth Weekly, stating, 'I just did an interview.'

Wang noted that his recent interview with Shen Po-yang on the radio program 'Eh! Where Was I?' on China Broadcasting Corporation sparked online discussions. 'People are analyzing whether I'm blue or green, what kind of skin and bones I have. Some call me 'Green Wei-chung,' while others complain the host talks too much and doesn't let the guest speak,' he said.

He added that some questioned why Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an wasn't invited, asking if the interview agenda wasn't properly coordinated. Others meticulously analyzed the subtle meanings behind every sentence and even scrutinized the body language of those from the Mainlander group. Some even declared, 'You've ruined your lifelong reputation in one stroke.' The criticisms were endless.

Wang emphasized that he simply conducted an interview. With over a decade of experience hosting daily TV programs and five years running a radio show, he has interviewed more than 500 people. He believes compelling interviews emerge from the personal challenges guests have faced in life. The key to success, he said, lies in adhering to principles and being honest with oneself, rather than chasing applause or avoiding criticism.

Wang clarified that he invites guests across the political spectrum and conducts interviews without a script—just casual conversation. Longtime listeners are familiar with this style, and he acknowledged that his work has always drawn criticism. Quoting philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, 'Human nature does not change,' Wang stated he has no intention of changing others or being changed by them. 'Whether I break out of my bubble or not, whether people like me or not—I just laugh it off!'

Reflecting on the looks he's received lately in public, Wang questioned, 'Are people seeing me as blue, green, or white? Do they like me or hate me? Who will care decades from now?'

He reminded the public that candidates will shape everyone's future and urged caution.
