Luk Calls for National Security Meeting Amid Trump-Xi Summit: Government Preparedness Key to Public Confidence

On April 24, the Taichung City Council held a general municipal inquiry session. Councilor Chen Ting-hsiu raised concerns about the potential impact of the Trump-Xi summit on Taiwan. Taichung Mayor Lu Hsiu-yen emphasized that 'national security is paramount,' and has repeatedly called on the central government to convene a national security meeting to prepare in advance. She stressed that the summit could affect international political, economic, and security dynamics, and that the government must be ready, respond appropriately, and clearly communicate its actions to the public to demonstrate its seriousness and reassure citizens.

Mayor Lu noted that the Trump-Xi summit has drawn global attention and could influence regional stability. Japanese Prime Minister Koshihima Sanae recently visited the U.S. to meet with President Trump, while South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has publicly expressed concerns over the summit's impact on the Asia-Pacific region—indicating both nations are closely monitoring the situation. Taiwan, situated between two major powers, may face more direct consequences.

Lu highlighted that the summit could affect Taiwan’s national security, cross-strait peace, and areas such as tariffs, finance, communications, and fiscal policy. Therefore, she insisted, 'Taiwan must be highly prepared.' She reiterated her calls for the central government to convene a national security meeting now, as this is the ideal time to prepare. The president should also brief the public on the situation and countermeasures to show that the government is ready and to calm public anxiety.

Lu also warned that even if no national security meeting is held, central officials responsible for national security should remain vigilant and on standby during the summit. Their schedules and actions should also consider public perception. She emphasized that 'preparation prevents problems' and that the government must be fully prepared to respond to any changes in the situation.
