TERRADA ART STUDIO Kyoto, operated by Warehouse TERRADA (Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, President and CEO: Kohei Terada), will launch a new program to foster further exchange among artists and create opportunities for new creations. The first event in this series will be a "Talk & Lecture on Aya Kurashiki's Production Methods" featuring artist Aya Kurashiki, to be held on July 31, 2026 (Fri).

TERRADA ART STUDIO Kyoto supports artists' creative environments and also strives to create opportunities for interaction among artists, art professionals, collectors, and art fans. This new program is being launched as a venue to further promote exchange among artists and spark new creative endeavors. Moving forward, through this program, we will continuously host events such as artist talks, lectures, and workshops, providing a space where participants can directly engage with the thoughts and production processes behind the artworks.

The first featured artist, Aya Kurashiki, primarily creates two-dimensional works using transfer techniques, while also expanding her expression into installations and performances. Her work continues to explore themes of the distance between self and others, community, and care. She is currently holding a solo exhibition at the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art in "The Triangle."

On the day of the event, an artist talk will focus on Ms. Kurashiki's themes, concepts, and the background of her work. In the latter half, she will demonstrate a part of her production process, including the transfer techniques used in her actual artwork, at the venue.

TERRADA ART STUDIO Kyoto aims to create a space where people can experience artists' creations and thoughts through this program, thereby supporting creative activities and promoting exchange.

[Profile]

Aya Kurashiki (くらき あーや)

Born in Hyogo Prefecture in 1993.

Completed Graduate School at Kyoto University of Art and Design in 2018 Completed Graduate School at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2020 26th Fellow of the Sato International Cultural Exchange Foundation 3rd Fellow of the Kuma Foundation Associate Artist for VIVA AWARD 2021 Member of the artist collective SISOUL.S

Her work, which views humans as beings separated by their bodies and attributes, has explored the distance and friction between self and others. Her practice serves as a bridge to reconnect relationships with others and as a means of care for survival. Simultaneously, it is an act of re-examining how her own body and attributes are positioned within the structure of the world. Using religion, gender, death, the body, family, and food as clues, she takes community and care as her motifs. While her two-dimensional works using transfer techniques form the core of her practice, she also develops installations, performances, and workshops. Her major works include the "Transition" series, which deals with the stigmas attached to the female body and the gaze of art history. She also created "Nine Stages of Decomposition," which addresses female figures burdened with "female sin" within male-centered narratives, using the Nine Stages of Decomposition, Ono no Komachi, and Mary Magdalene as motifs, as well as "Anointing Oil for Each Other" and "Lending a Hand" to show female solidarity. In recent years, she has presented works such as "Drawing #Fermented Nine Stages" and "Drawing #Tracing Boundaries," which overlap the structures of cooking and funeral rites; "Therapeutic Treatment" and "Interpersonal Distance," which deal with the physicality of internalizing others through funeral rites and communal eating; "We Are Family," a dining table resembling an altar; "Grave" and "Bury," which are likened to graves and urns; and the one-on-one performance "Breast," which involves offering beverages. Her major awards include the "KAIKA TOKYO AWARD" by Yushi Akimoto, selection for the "Gunma Biennale for Young Artists," and the "VOCA 2026" Honorable Mention. Her major exhibitions include "New Mutation #5 Aya Kurashiki / Ryo Nishimura 'Things That Transfer'" (Kyoto Art Center/Kyoto/2023), "Dancing in the Boundary" (NEWoMan Yokohama/Kanagawa/2024-2025), solo exhibition "When Your Bones Creak" (ARTDYNE/Tokyo/2025), solo exhibition "My Grandmother Lived Alone in the Mansion" (Live Art Gallery/Tokyo/2025), and solo exhibition "A Woman is Born, A Woman Dies, --Mother's Blood, Wine, Chocolate, Alcohol, Alcohol, Alcohol" (Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art/Kyoto/2026).
