Azabu University’s Interdisciplinary Animal Science Laboratory, which researches human-animal coexistence and its impact on both parties’ physical and mental health, has launched a joint research project with Shi-Ba [Shiba], Japan’s premier magazine for Japanese dog breeds published by Tatsumi Publishing.
Many dog owners may have experienced their beloved pet suddenly sitting down during a walk, refusing to move any further. The underlying reasons for this behavior remain largely unexplained.
This study aims to scientifically unravel the mechanisms behind so-called 'refusing Shiba' or 'Shiba distance' behaviors, exploring the fundamental question: Why do dogs suddenly stop walking during walks?
We are now seeking dog owners willing to participate in our research survey. Those interested are highly encouraged to take part.
Participation Guidelines
● Eligibility: Individuals who regularly walk their dogs as part of their household. Dog breed is not restricted. ● Survey Content: Questions regarding your dog’s personality traits and walking behaviors … Up to 73 questions / Estimated completion time: approximately 30 minutes ● Deadline: August 11, 2026 (Tuesday, national holiday), 23:59 JST ▼ Please respond to the survey via the link below.
Take the Research Survey
… The survey includes an invitation to a 'dog owner participation study' where participants will use smartphones to record their dog’s behavior (honorarium provided).
For Potential Participants
This survey is not limited to Shiba Inu owners. We welcome responses from owners of all dog breeds to compare breed-specific differences and identify unique characteristics of Shibas. All collected responses will be anonymized and abstracted for use as research data at Azabu University.
About the Research Results
Findings will be published by Azabu University through academic conferences and scholarly papers. Additionally, results may be shared with the public via the university’s website, explanatory articles, books, and potentially in the Shi-Ba magazine, its official website 'Inubiyori Plus,' and affiliated media.
We look forward to your participation.
