A new interpretation of the iconic, handcrafted-in-the-UK 1461 shoe. Dr. Martens and MHL. unveil their first collaboration, launching in July 2026.

What unites both brands is a shared value system rooted in thoughtful design, expert craftsmanship, and a commitment to long-term wearability.

At the heart of this partnership is the iconic 1461 model, celebrating its 65th anniversary this year. Originally launched on April 1, 1961—just one year after the debut of the original '1460' boot in 1960—the 1461 was developed as a durable work shoe. Its clean three-hole silhouette has been passed down for over 60 years, serving as the foundation for MHL.'s reinterpretation of this widely celebrated classic.

This model features chrome-free leather supplied by C. F. Stead, a tannery based in Leeds. The naturally oiled grain leather, available in deep brown and black, creates rich texture and depth of color. The matte, soft finish is designed to develop character over time, allowing for a natural and beautiful patina with extended use.

Attention to detail extends to every element: flat unwaxed cotton laces, a double-stitched toe cap, a padded heel collar, and a leather heel tab inspired by worker’s shoes from Dr. Martens’ extensive archive. The sole features the brand’s signature DMS air-cushion sole in a smoked color, finished with black-on-black Goodyear welt stitching.

Carrying forward Dr. Martens’ commitment to British craftsmanship, the 'DR.MARTENS FOR MHL. 1461' is handcrafted one pair at a time at the brand’s original Made-in-England factory in Northamptonshire.

"Dr. Martens’ lace-up shoes are timeless. They’re sturdy, thoughtfully made, and represent a style that transcends age. This resonates deeply with our MHL. collection."

― Margaret Howell

"It began with our deep respect for Margaret and her team’s approach to design—one that honors the past while evolving for the present. We’ve carried that philosophy into this project, using the iconic 1461 as a base and adding new expressions through details drawn directly from our archive."

― Michael Ford, Head of Brand Concept & Partnerships, Dr. Martens

ABOUT MHL.

British designer Margaret Howell began creating garments from her home in 1970. For her, clothing is not a fleeting trend but an integral part of daily life. She places great importance on material quality and construction, maintaining a steadfast commitment to her distinctive style. From menswear and womenswear to home products and cafes, the brand has expanded its categories and now operates stores in London, Paris, Florence, and across Japan.

The MHL. label emerged from an appreciation for the functional details and durable cotton fabrics found in workwear. The refined elegance of the MARGARET HOWELL collection combined with the rugged, practical character of MHL. — this fusion of contrasting elements embodies the essence of Margaret’s design philosophy.

ABOUT DR.MARTENS

Dr. Martens’ iconic boot, 'THE 1460 BOOT,' was first born in the UK on April 1, 1960. With its trademark yellow welt stitching, rounded upper, grooved sole, and unique outsole pattern, the boot was originally used as workwear for laborers. Over time, Dr. Martens boots and shoes became symbols of self-expression and strength, permeating subcultural scenes among artists, activists, and musicians. Thanks to their versatile design, durability, and comfort, they continue to define the footwear of live events, music festivals, and street fashion, serving as a banner of empowerment.

Traditional shoemaking continues, steadfastly preserving the craftsmanship unchanged since 1960.
