The Hirai Seminar and Nishijima Seminar (2nd to 4th year students) of the Regional Policy Department's Community Development Course at the University of Shimane, Hamada Campus, will hold the "Iwami Ginzan Town Revitalization Library Festival 2026" as part of their practical learning through interaction with local residents. This event is an initiative where students themselves plan and manage the festival, creating a space for intergenerational exchange between university students and local residents. About the Iwami Ginzan Town Revitalization Library
This facility is a "slightly unusual library" created by Nakamura Brace Co., Ltd. and the University of Shimane. It was born from the desire of Mr. Toshiro Nakamura, Chairman of Nakamura Brace Co., Ltd., a local manufacturer and seller of prosthetic and orthotic devices, to "create a place for learning in the community and energize the town with student activities," which resonated with the University of Shimane's philosophy of "growing together with the community." Under a partnership agreement, the former Matsubara residence was renovated as part of Nakamura Brace Co., Ltd.'s traditional house regeneration project, and the facility is operated by the University of Shimane.
Iwami Ginzan Town Revitalization Library Andon Room
It is not merely a satellite campus used only by the university, but a library cafe and co-working space that can be used by local residents and tourists. The facility is equipped with bookshelves (approx. 200 picture books, approx. 200 general books), a cafe, a co-working space, a meeting lounge, a gallery, a pool, and seminar spaces.
The act of students planning and managing the events is itself considered a learning opportunity. The facility is open free of charge from Thursday to Sunday (the university uses it from Monday to Wednesday), offering food and drinks at the cafe, as well as a paid co-working space and a gallery where student-planned exhibitions are held.
