var Inc. (Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, CEO Eishiki Furukoshi), which operates the specialized IT school "RareTECH" for nurturing rare type engineers, conducted two surveys on work styles and job openings. Among 794 individuals aiming for a career change to engineering, "rewarding work" was the most desired work style (approximately 52%), closely followed by "full remote" at about 50%.
Meanwhile, among 100 job openings with an annual salary of 6 million yen or more and full remote possibility, based on our analysis of public job information, the most common role was "full stack" (50 openings, half of the total). Lead positions such as design, technology selection, and team leadership accounted for about a quarter (26 openings), while jobs requiring "only front-end" were about 10% (9 openings). This suggests that jobs enabling full remote work tend not to be confined to a single language or domain. As a first step to bridge this gap, we are releasing a free learning app, "RareTECH Rare Type Engineer Glossary," to learn frequently used terms in job postings (currently distributed via official LINE).
Many people aspire to become engineers, attracted by the freedom in work styles. What kind of people are companies that offer such work styles actually looking for? RareTECH surveyed "the desired work styles of aspiring engineers" and "the roles and technologies sought in job postings."
Survey 1: "Ideal Work Styles" Chosen by 794 Aspiring Engineers
"Rewarding work" ranked first. Approximately half of respondents desired "full remote" work.
We compiled the "ideal work styles" chosen by 794 users of RareTECH's "Learning Roadmap Diagnosis" app (multiple responses allowed). The respondents were mainly individuals new to IT or those studying independently.
"Rewarding work" was chosen most frequently at approximately 52%, followed by "full remote" at about 50%, "high income" at about 43%, and "full flexible" at about 40%. The results show that more people prefer "rewarding work" and "freedom in work location and time" over "high income."
When asked to choose a single top priority, "rewarding work" was selected by about 36% and "full remote" by about 35%, nearly tying. Only about 15% prioritized "high income."
Furthermore, trends change depending on the current situation. Among those completely new to IT, "full remote" was chosen most often. However, among those studying independently or those who encounter IT in their work, "rewarding work" was the most frequently selected. The closer individuals are to becoming engineers, the more they tend to choose "job content" over "freedom of work location."
Survey 2: "Roles and Technologies" in 100 Full Remote Jobs with Annual Salary of 6 Million Yen or More
"Full stack engineers" accounted for half of the positions.
Next, based on public job postings, we independently collected and analyzed 100 engineer job openings with an annual salary of 6 million yen or more and full remote possibility.
The roles in the job postings are particularly noteworthy. The most common was "full stack" (handling both front-end and back-end), making up 50 out of 100 openings. "Back-end" followed with 31 openings, while "front-end" jobs were limited to 9 (about 10%). Additionally, lead positions such as tech leads and engineering managers, responsible for design, technology selection, and team leadership, accounted for 26 openings.
Regarding the technologies listed in the job postings, TypeScript was the most common language (76 out of 100 openings). Modern languages like Go (50) and Python (47) were also among the top.
In the most frequent category, full stack (50 openings), individuals were expected to handle both front-end and back-end. Even in back-end focused roles (31 openings), the responsibilities often included cloud, team development, and design. This indicates a trend where the central role is not fixed to a single area, with language being just one entry point.
TypeScript was required in 76 openings, revealing its widespread necessity.
*These statistics are based on the content described in 100 public job postings and do not guarantee the trends for all job openings.
*This is a compilation of results narrowed down to the conditions of "annual salary of 6 million yen or more" and "full remote." Different results may occur depending on the conditions.
The Gap Between "Ideal Work Styles" and "Roles Demanded by IT Companies"
Comparing the two surveys reveals a disparity. While many people desire the freedom of a full remote work style, many of the jobs that enable this are not confined to a single language or domain. Full stack engineers, who handle both front-end and back-end, are the most sought after, along with many lead positions in design and team leadership. The term "full stack" implies "covering everything," which can be daunting for beginners wondering where to start their learning journey.
This also overlaps with challenges in the Japanese engineering industry. Engineers who are what RareTECH calls "mass-produced engineers" tend to be assigned fixed, routine tasks within a single domain, making it difficult to gain experience in multiple areas or in design and team leadership. This creates a structure where it's hard to acquire the technical skills required for full remote, high-paying jobs. This is also true for beginners just starting their studies. Finding an environment where one can learn all these technologies comprehensively is difficult.
To help bridge the gap between "ideal work styles" and "roles demanded by IT companies," RareTECH is releasing the free learning app "RareTECH Rare Type Engineer Glossary." This app is a vocabulary-building tool that allows users to learn frequently appearing specialized terms in job postings, one by one, in order of frequency. It covers not only programming languages but also cloud, data, team development, and design.
RareTECH Engineer Nakanishi
Comment from a RareTECH Engineer
I'm Nakanishi, an engineer. I vividly remember being completely overwhelmed when I first applied for an engineering job. I was coldly told things like, "You should have experience in XX," or "Isn't it better to start by building something as a team?"
Looking back, it was natural. Engineers must approach their job search by imagining the technologies a development team uses and their company culture. If you have no knowledge, companies cannot hire you. What helps in such situations is "knowledge." It might seem obvious, but the accumulation of "knowing even that" increases your chances of being hired. Acquiring knowledge might feel like an endless journey. However, for us "technologists," the value of "knowing more than anyone else" is what enriches our lives.
Therefore, don't be overwhelmed by the vast amount of technology. Try to acquire knowledge with this "RareTECH Rare Type Engineer Glossary."

About RareTECH
RareTECH is a "specialized IT school for nurturing rare type engineers." It offers a curriculum designed to cultivate rare type engineers. Students range from those completely new to IT to mass-produced engineers. Anyone can enroll.
Mass-produced engineers are current engineers who tend to be assigned specific tasks, find it difficult to gain experience in unique areas, and consequently have limited options for their ideal work style. This survey revealed that full stack engineers are most in demand by companies. While programming has long been emphasized, less than 10% of job postings are solely for programming, and in reality, the ability to handle a wide range of domains is required. RareTECH cultivates engineers who can contribute to business problem-solving by learning a broad spectrum of skills, from IT fundamentals to front-end, back-end, cloud/infrastructure, team development, design, and even security and data science. The curriculum also includes team development and design experience through hackathons (up to 8 times, depending on the course and continuation conditions), which accounts for about a quarter of the job postings for lead roles.
