The demand for machine vision systems capable of rapidly and accurately detecting product defects, contamination, and foreign object inclusion on production lines is increasing. There is a growing need for technology that analyzes images captured by cameras and sensors using computers, enabling machines to 'see' and automatically recognize, judge, and control processes.
Our RYUGU liquid lens is composed of liquid, and by applying external electrical signals, it can freely adjust optical power and magnification.
Since it uses liquid and electrical signals, the response speed is extremely fast—just 15ms (1ms = 1/1,000 of a second).
When imaging multiple points at different heights using fixed-focus cameras, multiple cameras are typically required. However, our RYUGU liquid lens can rapidly focus on different heights using a single lens, enabling imaging and image analysis. In contrast to motor-driven lens cameras, which suffer from motor degradation, vibration, and limited lifespan, our RYUGU liquid lens operates without any vibration and guarantees 100 million operational cycles.

This annual event brings together mechanical engineering researchers and professionals affiliated with the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers for research presentations and information exchange. It is one of Japan’s largest academic conferences, attracting over 2,000 participants annually.
The conference theme is 'Pioneering Knowledge Connecting Mechanical Engineering and Future Society — From Shonan to the World.' It aims to discuss how mechanical engineering can shape future society from a more international perspective, foster collaboration between corporate researchers and young scientists, promote industry-academia partnerships, and create new platforms for innovation.

Future Outlook
The RYUGU liquid lens uses a voltage-driven mechanism, consuming extremely low power during operation (a few milliwatts), with no heat generation or vibration even during prolonged use. Leveraging these capabilities, the lens is expected to be applied in various fields, including automated visual inspection systems in mass production plants, industrial cameras, and various image sensing devices. Going forward, we plan to enter markets such as dedicated cameras and drones—where power efficiency is critical—once the development of large-aperture lenses is complete.
