Sapporo Breweries Ltd., a group company of Sapporo Holdings Ltd., will launch "Travelogue," a beer using "Regenova" malt (Note 2) made from barley grown through regenerative agriculture (Note 1) with reduced environmental impact during cultivation to reduce raw material-derived greenhouse gas emissions. The product will be released in limited quantities at "YEBISU BREWERY TOKYO" starting Saturday, April 4 (Note 3). The adoption of "Regenova" in a beer product is the first of its kind in Japan (Note 4).
"Regenova" is a malt manufactured by the major French malting company "Soufflet Malt" (Note 5). During the cultivation of the barley used as its raw material, soil analysis is conducted to minimize the use of fertilizer to the absolute optimum necessity, reducing environmental impact. In addition, it is produced incorporating regenerative agriculture that improves soil health. Regenerative agriculture is based on a series of agricultural practices such as crop rotation, reduced tillage, and the use of cover crops. We believe these practices lead to a reduction in the chemical fertilizers used and stabilization of barley yield, contributing to climate change adaptation and biodiversity protection.
In order to realize "safe and secure" deliciousness, our company is thoroughly particular about raw materials, and our field managers (Note 6) communicate with producers around the world to achieve the procurement of safe, secure, and high-quality raw materials. The adoption of "Regenova" was realized through years of efforts to collaborate with suppliers, such as field managers visiting production sites. By reducing the use of chemical fertilizers, "Regenova" is expected to have the effect of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 6% or more compared to conventional barley cultivation.
Moving forward, the Sapporo Group will continue to utilize regenerative agriculture as an important and effective means to achieve goals such as greenhouse gas reduction and biodiversity conservation in the agricultural sector, aiming toward the realization of a "decarbonized society" and a "society in harmony with nature," which are our key sustainability issues (Note 7), thereby contributing to the realization of a sustainable society.
(Note 1) An agricultural method focusing on the soil of agricultural land, aiming to enhance soil health by regenerating its ecosystem and make crop production sustainable.
(Note 2) "Regenova" is a malt developed for our company based on the "RegenAg" malt from Soufflet Malt.
