Warning for Warmer Weather: Survey Finds 1 in 3 Eco-Bag Users Neglect Hygiene

Kao Corporation conducts various studies and information campaigns related to daily life. Since the mandatory charge for plastic shopping bags began in July 2020, eco-bag usage has increased, becoming a staple item for many. However, keeping eco-bags used for groceries unwashed—often contaminated with meat/fish fluids or soil from vegetables—poses a risk of food poisoning bacteria growth.

Kao conducted a survey on the usage and cleaning frequency of eco-bags. Ahead of warmer weather, findings along with tips for maintaining cleanliness and material-specific care methods were published on "My Kao Kurashi Lab" on May 26, 2026.

Key Survey Highlights: - 80% use eco-bags for grocery shopping at least once a week, but 1 in 3 never clean them. - 46% are more concerned about "bacterial or viral contamination" than visible stains.

To maintain hygiene, Kao suggests placing meat, fish, and vegetables in plastic bags to avoid direct contact, paying attention to packing order, using separate bags for food and household items, and emptying and drying bags promptly upon returning home. They also recommend regular home washing or using antibacterial/deodorizing sprays based on the material.
